ART 214 Beginning Sculpture 2
This is a beginning sculpture course, which builds on design principles, aesthetic considerations and basic techniques of working as they relate to the creation of three-dimensional art that were introduced in foundations classes. Specifically, the course will concentrate on casting techniques including pattern making, modeling in wax and clay and transfer of the image to plaster, bronze and aluminum. Processes will involve cope and drag casting, transfer moldmaking and investment moldmaking, pouring molten non-ferrous metals, and finishing cast metal works through chasing and other surface cleanup, patination and sealing.
Course Objectives
A primary concern is to heighten awareness of design principles and to refine aesthetic values through sculpture created by the student. Exploration of the visual communication of thoughts, opinions, desires and beliefs at various levels of understanding from the artist to the viewer is also of primary importance. Interaction with peers and professionals will add to this process. Physical experimentation during project work will develop creative problem solving skills. Knowledge of materials and manual dexterity with tools will be increased.
