{"id":6526,"date":"2019-02-14T16:22:34","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T16:22:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/art.bradley.edu\/will\/?p=6526"},"modified":"2019-02-14T18:40:24","modified_gmt":"2019-02-14T18:40:24","slug":"silent-sky","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/art.bradley.edu\/will\/2019\/02\/14\/silent-sky\/","title":{"rendered":"Silent Sky"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>As always, great fun creating the promotional piece for the latest theatre production &#8211; <em>Silent Sky.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>THE STORY OF STELLAR WOMEN WHO MADE ASTRONOMICAL DISCOVERIES<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bradley.edu\/academic\/departments\/theatre\/\">Bradley University Theatre<\/a> proudly opens its spring season with <em>Silent Sky<\/em>,  Lauren Gunderson\u2019s, acclaimed  play about Henrietta Leavitt, the early  20th-century astronomer whose discoveries forever changed the way that  we understand the universe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"614\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/art.bradley.edu\/will\/files\/2019\/02\/18x30_Box_office-614x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6527\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Henrietta Leavitt, invited to join a staff of women \u201ccomputers\u201d at \nthe Harvard Observatory, left her home and family in Wisconsin and \ndistinguished herself in the shadow of male superiors who not only \nforbade her to touch a telescope but often took credit for her \npioneering work. At a time when the Milky Way was commonly believed to \ncomprise the entire universe, Leavitt and her female colleagues studied \nphotographic plates of the stars, laboriously cataloguing them, \ncalculating luminosity and searching for patterns. Leavitt\u2019s unwavering \nexamination of blinking stars, or Cepheids, led her to discover that \nlight could be used to determine the distance and size of the stars in \nour galaxy\u2014and tell us not only that the universe is infinitely larger \nthan we believed, but also exactly where in its vast reaches we live. \nThese crucial discoveries provided the foundation for the work of later,\n better-known astronomers, including Edwin Hubble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As always, great fun creating the promotional piece for the latest theatre production &#8211; Silent Sky.
