Lithospheric Shift visualizes the geologic landscape and cultural artifacts found along tectonic plate boundaries. The Red Zone of Vesuvius include photographs of Mt. Vesuvius, archeological fragments from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Rift / Fault is a study of the two land-based edges of the North American Tectonic Plate: the San Andreas Fault in California and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge in Iceland. Tectonic plates slide along the fluid mantle of our earth, underneath our oceans, our land, our homes. Plate edges shift, erupt, and tremble. Their behavior is for the most part unpredictable, and wholly uncontainable. And while boundaries upon the land are often contested, politicized, and fought over, tectonic plate boundaries remain immune to human efforts of control.

This exhibition brings together various projects of visual artist John Steck Jr. In the Shadow of the Bloom is an exhibition that uses plants and flowers in order to address larger themes such as time, memory, entropy, natural beauty, and decay. Steck is not a botanist, florist, or gardener, but rather someone who is interested in how we actively reference and work in conjunction with art history. Much of his work draws from the early practitioners of photography, such as Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins, all of whom used the garden as a means for photographic investigation. Steck expands on those traditional processes by pushing their limitations in order to expand the boundaries of photography.
