This exhibition brings together various projects of visual artist John Steck Jr. In the Shadow of the Bloom is an exhibition that uses plants and flowers in order to address larger themes such as time, memory, entropy, natural beauty, and decay. Steck is not a botanist, florist, or gardener, but rather someone who is interested in how we actively reference and work in conjunction with art history. Much of his work draws from the early practitioners of photography, such as Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins, all of whom used the garden as a means for photographic investigation. Steck expands on those traditional processes by pushing their limitations in order to expand the boundaries of photography.
