Jo Hamilton

Jo Hamilton
Heuser Art Gallery
August 28 – September 27

An exhibition featuring the work of artist Jo Hamilton will be on display in Heuser Art Gallery August 28 – September 27. Hamilton’s crocheted portraiture is a fascinating combination of traditional technique with contemporary subject matter. A native of Scotland, Hamilton earned a degree in painting and drawing from the Glasgow School of Art, but after moving to Portland, she translated her artistic vision into the medium of crochet, which she had first learned as a child from her grandmother. She has made large-scale cityscapes as well as larger than life portraits, ranging from matriarchs to masked women, to giant male nudes, to commission subjects. Her work has been widely shown in the U.S. and Europe as well as in China and South Korea and belongs to museums and private collections in the US and worldwide.

David Johnson – Bourgeois Blues, linocut, 2018

The Bradley International Print and Drawing Exhibition is the second-longest running juried print and drawing competition in the country. Every two years it features the best contemporary graphic artwork from around the globe. Traditional and non-traditional graphic media, including printmaking, drawing, book arts, and experimental techniques are represented in the show. This year’s BI features 134 works of art by 109 artists from across the globe and will be held at seven prominent Peoria Illinois Galleries, The Contemporary Art Center of Peoria, Prairie Center of the Arts, Studios on Sheridan, Illinois Central College, Peoria Art Guild, and on campus at Bradley University at Heuser Art Gallery and Hartmann Center Gallery.  The 37th Bradley International was juried by Janet Ballweg.

Ballweg received an MFA from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and a BS in Art from the University of Wisconsin, Madison.  She is currently a Professor of Creative Arts Excellence and the head of the Printmaking program at Bowling Green State University in northwest Ohio, where she has taught since 1990.  Her ongoing research focuses on the integration of digital and traditional printmaking technologies. Exhibited in over 400 exhibitions across the U.S. and abroad, Ballweg’s work has received numerous awards, including an Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award as well as awarded residencies in Provincetown, Massachusetts, Florence, Italy, and Guanlan, China.

Christopher Holbrook: His Own Private Circus

Hartmann Center Gallery
January 16 – February 15
Closing Reception
: February 15, 5-7pm

An exhibition will be held in Hartmann Center Gallery featuring the artwork and processes of our friend and colleague Christopher Holbrook who passed away last year after a battle with cancer.

This exhibition was curated by Holbrook’s partner Susanne Nestory. Nestory writes “It has been a joy and a pleasure to prepare this exhibition in honor of my late partner and companion, Christopher Holbrook. My vision for the show was to recreate the intimate experience of a working studio where his humorous and playful spirit thrived. He was fascinated by the tactile sense and he gathered and collected all manner of detritus; from found scraps, cutout photographs and pieces of fabric to rocks, sticks and remnants from the botanical world. He was also an avid reader and collector of words, phrases and accents. His artwork was inspired by the possibilities inherent in these different forms, patterns and textures.”

Join us for the closing reception on February 15th from 5-7pm.

An article on Chris and the exhibition was featured in the Peoria Journal Star: https://www.pjstar.com/entertainmentlife/20190117/chris-holbrooks-private-circus-of-characters-he-drew-will-be-on-display-at-bradley-university

Holly Roberts – The Bunn Lectureship in Photography

Exhibition: Heuser Art Gallery,  January 14 – February 15
Visual Voices Lecture: February 7, 5-6pm – Horowitz Auditorium, Caterpillar Global Communications Center
Reception: February 7, 6-7:30pm

Photographer Holly Roberts will present this year’s Bunn Lectureship in Photography Thursday, February 7th at 5pm in Horowitz Auditorium, Caterpillar Global Communications Center.

From the artist: “This exhibit is a compendium of earlier and more recent work, going back as far as the 80’s. I was first known for my heavily overpainted black and white silver prints, but shifted in 2005 by reversing the process, applying bits and pieces of my photographs over densely painted panels. Throughout the decades, however, my themes have stayed constant: images of people and animals telling complicated stories, most often with a heavy psychological overlay. I am pleased and honored to have my work presented at Bradley University in the Heuser Art Gallery through the generous support of Jacob and Laurie Bunn and the Bunn Lectureship in Photography.”

This program has been made possible by the generous support of The Bunn Lectureship in Photography series. Endowed by a generous donation from Bradley alums, Jacob and Lorrie Bunn, for over 20 years The Bunn Lectureship in Photography has brought nationally and internationally recognized photographers to Bradley’s campus. With the goal of broadening and enriching students’ educational experience, this program supports exhibitions, lectures, and workshops where students benefit from direct interaction with professional photographers.
